64-bit mobile chip available in a large inventory
Apple introduced the 64-bit mobile chip first in the iPhone 5s in 2013, which was eventually followed by competitors. TSMC had hinted last week that their 64-bit mobile chips are ready to meet with us. If TSMC, the world's largest chip foundry, sees a shift to 64, this trend will indeed come because they will make a lot of 64-bit chips. So what other manufacturers do? When will their 64-bit mobile chips be available? The technology website CNET conducted a quick inventory of this:
Intel: Intel's 64-bit Bay Trail has been adopted by some of today's tablet PCs, such as the HP ElitePad 1000 G2. And they are not just waiting for Android to enter 64-bit: they have provided 64-bit kernel for Android 4.4. Intel’s mobile chips, which will be launched later this year, such as Merrifield, will also be 64-bit.
Samsung: "When the operating system and ecosystem enter the 64-bit, our chips will be ready at any time." Kyushik Hong, vice president of business marketing at Samsung Systems LSI, revealed to reporters at the MWC in February that their 64-bit chips will be available this year.
Qualcomm: After Apple introduced the A7, Qualcomm also released a series of 64-bit processors, such as the latest Xiaolong 810 and 808. However, the actual launch of these chips will wait until the first half of next year.
Nvidia: The 64-bit version of Tegra K1 is scheduled to be launched later this year.
MediaTek: The MT6752 platform will be commercially released in the third quarter of this year, and volume production will begin in the fourth quarter.
So what can 64 bits get you? In addition to the ability to use more memory, 64-bit chips can also make mobile phones more efficient for processing a large number of applications. Currently, the application area set up by ARM for 64-bit chips is servers, not smartphones. This is because servers can immediately benefit from 64-bit chips.
We all know that Apple's 64-bit A7 chip is fast. Although this performance is not necessarily tied to the 64-bit level of the chip architecture, as developers write more 64-bit applications, it allows Apple to pursue desktop-class performance (through future processors).
