Allegro launches high-brightness LED driver (Figure)

Allegro has released a new high-brightness, adjustable constant current LED driver. The LED driver is targeted at the automotive lighting market and is well suited for industrial and consumer LED applications. The new device is designed to operate over typical automotive battery and temperature ranges. The specified input voltage is a minimum of 6V and a maximum of 40V. For typical applications, the linear constant current output can be adjusted up to 350mA. The ENABLE input is used to activate the LED driver, which can be driven by a pulse width modulation (PWM) input to adjust the LED brightness. To reduce EMI, the slew rate of the output current can be controlled during switching. In addition, if the ENABLE pin is held low, it will cause the IC to enter a low-static sleep mode. Typical applications for the Allegro A6260 include: automotive interior lighting (such as reading lights and ceiling lights), exterior lighting (such as tailgate lights, brake lights), and trunk lighting. Many of the features of the A6260 are also suitable for industrial and consumer high-brightness LED lighting applications.

The integrated circuit uses multi-layer automotive-grade protection, and the IC is protected from ground shorts or battery shorts. The new IC also incorporates a thermal shutdown circuit (TSD) that disables the IC if the junction temperature reaches 165 °C. Allegro's A6260 features integrated battery reverse protection to minimize the need for external battery diodes.

The A6260 also has a built-in temperature monitoring circuit. This circuit monitors the die temperature and will cause the output current to fold back down. The temperature threshold at the start of the foldback can be adjusted by selecting the appropriate resistor on the THTH pin. This feature allows the LED driver to dynamically protect itself when a transient overvoltage occurs on VIN (eg, load dump or dual battery). This feature can also be used to help protect the LED from high temperature conditions if the IC is mounted on the correct substrate and close to the LED.

Allegro's new LED drivers are available in an 8-pin thermally enhanced SOIC package.
