Apple's new patent exposure: under-screen micro-hole lens and under-screen recognition of 3D fingerprint structure data

The United States Patent Office (USPTO) recently published an approved patent application filed by Apple, describing a new under-screen fingerprint recognition technology that may eliminate a major obstacle to embedding the Touch ID fingerprint sensor in the iPhone screen.

According to the description, Apple’s patent is not an optical under-screen fingerprint scanning technology, nor is it an ultrasonic fingerprint solution that Samsung’s new devices may use, but a way that a dielectric sensor assists other overlapping sensors, light sources and under-screen micro-hole cameras.

This technology allows Apple to obtain 3D fingerprint feature data. By strategically arranging multiple micro-hole cameras under the screen, it will also help capture the 3D fingerprint structure. The application number of this patented technology is 20180225498, and the application was submitted in January this year, later than the release of iPhone X.

The sole inventor of the patent is Dale Setlak, who joined Apple with the acquisition of the biometric company Authentec in 2012.
