China’s smartphone sales fell sharply in 2018

According to foreign media reports, a new report released by market research company Canalys shows that as the world's largest market, sales of Chinese smartphones continue to shrink this year. In the first quarter of 2018, sales of smartphones in China dropped 21% from 114 million in the same period last year to 91 million.

In the first quarter of 2018, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi firmly occupied the top positions in smartphone sales, which together accounted for 73% of the market; in the same period last year, this figure was only 58%.

Other mobile phone brands, including Apple, together account for 27% of the market; in the first quarter of 2017, this figure was 42%. This shows that the Chinese mobile phone market is further integrated and has now become a paradise for major mobile phone brands.

Among the top ten smartphone brands in China, only two smartphone brands – Huawei and Xiaomi – saw year-on-year growth in the first quarter. Their sales in the first quarter increased by 2% and 37% respectively.

China’s smartphone sales fell sharply in 2018

In the first quarter of 2018, sales of the other eight smartphone brands all declined. Among them, Jin Li, Meizu and Samsung fell the most, falling more than 50% in the first quarter.

As China's second-largest and third-largest smartphone brand, Oppo and Vivo's sales fell by about 10% year-on-year in the first quarter.

“The fierce competition has forced mobile phone suppliers to start to imitate each other, leading to a serious product homogenization,” said Canal Jias analyst Mo Jia. “But in the Chinese market, marketing and channel management costs. Very large, only a certain size of mobile phone suppliers can cope."

“While Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi must face the shrinking Chinese mobile phone market, what makes them happy is that the market is undergoing consolidation and their size can help their smaller competitors go further.”

Other relevant statistics also show similar results.

A research report released by the China Institute of Information and Communications in early April also indicated that in the first quarter of 2018, China’s smartphone sales reached 82 million units, down 27% from the same period last year.

About a year ago, sales of smartphones in China began to fall. In December 2017, China’s smartphone sales hit the largest monthly decline, down 33.2% year-on-year.

According to a report released by market research firm Counterpoint, in the first quarter of 2018, China's smartphone sales fell by 8% year-on-year and 21% quarter-on-quarter.

The report also shows that in the first quarter, China's top five mobile phone brands - Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Apple and Xiaomi - together accounted for 82% of the market share; in the first quarter of 2017, this figure is only 72 %.
