Researchers from the University of California at Berkeley found that solar cell designs can generate the maximum amount of energy if they incorporate similar light-emitting devices such as LEDs.
"We have shown that the better a solar cell emits a photon, the higher the voltage and efficiency of its energy," said Eli Yablonovitch, principal researcher at the University of California at Berkeley.
Avoid "lost" photons in the battery
Recently, Yablonovitch and his colleagues tried to understand why there is such a big gap between the theoretical limits and the limits they have reached. They encountered a relatively simple solution that might be counterintuitive, based on a mathematical connection between light absorption and dissipation.
According to the research team's research, the design allows the solar cell to emit light - so that the photons will not "lost" within the cell - a natural effect on increasing the voltage generated by the solar cell.
Prototype efficiency jumped from 26% to 28.3%
Yablonovitch co-founded Alta equipment, using a new concept to create a prototype solar cell using gallium arsenide (GaAs), a cell material commonly used in satellites. The prototype broke the world record and efficiency increased from 26% to 28.3%.
Yablonovitch expects researchers to achieve nearly 30% efficiency in the next few years. The Berkeley team will present its findings at the Laser and Electro-Optical Conference in San Jose, Calif., from May 6 to May 11, 2012.
