World's First Braille Tablet: It Has Really Touchable Screens

[Abstract] Blitab tablet computer display consists of two parts: touch screen and braille display. The Braille display can display 14 lines of Braille each time, which is far better than the existing similar products on the market, and the price is low.

Tencent Digital (Wen Xin) According to the MIT Technology Review website, most tablet PCs operate through touch screens. However, a Tablet PC displayed by Slavi Slavev is clearly not Most of the "list.

Slavviv loaded a website on the tablet and pressed a button on the side of the tablet. Bubbles appeared in the hole in the upper half of the device. The tablet can translate text and other digital content on web pages into Braille - 65 characters at a time, making it easier for the blind or the sighted to access a variety of topics, including dice, e-books and news. content.

Slavic is the chief technology officer and founder of the tablet developer and startup company Blitab. Blitab, located in Vienna, Austria, is nearing the completion of the development of this eponymous tablet (currently quite clumsy). Blitab plans to start selling the tablet at about $500 (about RMB3,457) six months later. If you use 8 hours per day, it is estimated that charging Blitab can be used for 5 days.

Although there are braille displays that can be refreshed on the market today, their prices are often in the thousands of dollars, and they can only display one line of Braille, so users can only “read” several words at a time.

Kristina Tsvetanova, Blitab’s founder and chief executive, said, “Imagine watching Harry Potter for only 5 words at a time, which will make people Crazy."

According to the MIT Technology Review, Blitab's Braille display consists of 14 rows, each consisting of 23 units, each consisting of 6 points, each of which can display a Braille letter. Underneath the grid is a multi-layered liquid and a special membrane. Blitab did not disclose the details of this membrane.

Blitab's online service converts the contents of the device's lower touch screen to Braille. Pressing a button on the side of the body will force the MEMS actuator below each hole to push up a tiny bubble. Press another button on the side of the body and the device will use the contents of the next page to refresh the braille display. Last December, researchers at the University of Michigan demonstrated a cheap braille display that is under development.

The touch screen portion of the Blitab Tablet runs Google Android software and includes a screen reading function (this type of accessibility is standard on Android and iOS tablets). However, it is also pre-installed with a Braille input method application that can perform tasks such as reading e-books offline.

According to the MIT Technology Review, it is not easy to obtain enough users for the Blitab Tablet PC because the target market for such devices is quite limited. A study conducted by the American Foundation for the Blind in 2009 found that less than 10% of American blind people read Braille.

Jonathan Lazar, a professor of computer and information science at Towson University in the United States, believes that the launch of the Blitab tablet will attract more people interested in learning and using Braille, in part because its price is much lower than existing braille equipment.

He said, "Conceptually, their product is a great idea. If they can really introduce a $500 braille tablet, this is definitely a big step forward."
