Solid-state light source penetration rate will be greatly improved

According to the news, the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Engineering and Medical Research (NAS) recently released the second report on the status of LED and OLED lighting. The report states that by 2030, solid-state lighting (SSL) can save 40% of the lighting energy.

In addition, the report shows that the US Department of Energy (DOE) solid-state lighting program has been a key factor in the transition to LEDs faster than expected, and further indicates that the agency's research and development funds should continue.

NAS released its first solid-state lighting report in 2013. These reports were conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) to inform the US Congress of the progress of solid-state lighting. The 2013 report urges all parties to continue researching core LED and OLED technologies to improve efficiency and yield. The US Department of Energy has also funded many of these R&D projects through programs such as small business innovation research and technology transfer for small businesses.

The US Department of Energy also funded research by major companies in solid-state lighting. For example, the US Department of Energy awarded $10 million in prizes to nine companies and research institutions in mid-2015.

The new NAS report indicates that solid-state lighting penetration has increased significantly since the last report, although absolute data is still very low. Studies have shown that 6.4% of general lighting installed in the United States in 2015 was solid-state lighting. The report predicts that this number will reach 48% by 2020.

The report documents two side effects of the great interest of LEDs not predicted in the 2013 report. Previous studies did not foresee the collapse of LED component prices, in part because of oversupply, which led NAS to call the “violent dislocation and restructuring of the solid-state lighting market”. Simply put, companies in the solid-state lighting sector have not achieved the expected profits.

The resulting positive effect is to seek new applications for solid-state lighting. For example, we regularly cover horticultural lighting themes and plan another upcoming event. Other examples include Human Centric Lighting (HCL), as well as smart lighting and the Internet of Things.

The NAS committee believes that solid-state lighting offers tremendous commercial potential and is likely to continue to reduce energy consumption. The report also specifically provided some investment advice for DOE. “The Commission recommended that the US Department of Energy continue to invest in core technologies for improving solid-state lighting technology, including LEDs and OLEDs; and should consider solutions that ultimately allow low-cost implementation. Early investment in disruptive technologies is also impossible for the industry. ( " 文/Oscar translation)
