Although most of us are accustomed to using resolution numbers (such as 1920x1080 displays), pixel density is a more useful number, especially when describing AR and VR head-shots. For head display, achieving "retina resolution" is the ultimate goal, that is, at a certain pixel density, even those with perfect vision cannot discern any extra details. Today's article shared by DimensionWeb mainly discusses this concept and describes how far the current headshot is from this goal.
The author of this article is Yuval, executive director of Sensics, and co-founder of OSVR. Yuval and his team designed the OSVR software platform and built a key part of the OSVR product. He often shares his ideas and knowledge on his blog.
If the human eye is a digital camera, the "Spec Sheet" will show that it is equipped with a sensor that can detect the fovea (the area with the highest retinal vision) of 60 pixels/per degree. For visual quality, any screen above 60 pixels/degree is actually a waste because the human eye can no longer discern any extra details. This is called retina resolution.
This means that if the 3600 pixel (60 x 60) image is located in the fovea 1 x 1 degree region, we will not be able to distinguish this from the 8100 pixel (90 x 90) image that falls in the same region.
Note: 60 pixels/degree is sometimes expressed as "1 arc minutes/pixel". Arc is the unit of measurement angle, 1 degree is 60 arc minutes, and this calculation is the basis of Apple's "retina screen".
If you have a VR headset, you can calculate the pixel density (that is, the number of pixels per inch of screen) by simply dividing the pixels in the horizontal display line by the horizontal field of view provided by the lens. For example, the Oculus Rift DK1 uses a single 1280×800 display (640×800 pixels for single eye), and the single-eye horizontal field of view is about 90 degrees, so the calculated pixel density is 7 pixels/degree (640÷90). ). At this point you will find the retina screen with a value well below 60 pixels/degree.
7 pixels/degree is a linear pixel density. From the perspective of pixel density/surface area, this is 8.5 times worse than the human eye (60÷7 = 8.5), but the actual situation is even worse (8.5×8.5, over 70).
The following is a partial display of pixel density:
The more pixel density, the richer the details of the displayed image, and the more realistic images can be achieved overall.
Historically, the difference between professional-level VR heads and consumer heads has been pixel density. Let's compare the following four images. First, let's assume that the first image is 60 pixels per degree; we can then resample half the pixel density (30 pixels per degree); then resampling once (15 pixels per degree); and finally resample again ( 7.5 pixels/per degree). Please note that as we continue to reduce the pixel density, the differences will become more apparent.
60 pixels/per degree
30 pixels/per degree
15 pixels/per degree
7.5 pixels/per degree
The higher pixel density on the vision system does not necessarily match the higher pixel density on the screen because the pixels on the screen are magnified by the optics. So for the same screen, two different optical systems can produce different pixel densities; for the same optical system, the higher pixel density on the screen can translate into higher pixel density.
With the continuous development of the screen, the head display will be closer and closer to realizing the resolution of the retina, which will bring us a quasi-realistic experience.
