Apple wants to get rid of Samsung OLED monopoly

BOE said that the company is building a new OLED plant in Mianyang, Sichuan, or will start production in 2019. Mianyang plant is said to supply iPhone's OLED panel. According to relevant sources, Apple is exploring BOE technology and will use BOE OLED on Apple Watch before expanding it to the iPhone.

At present, the OLED orders for the iPhone are all supplied by Samsung Electronics. In order to disperse the supply, Apple actively contacts BOE, LGD, and Japan Display, and shares the technology with the above three plants.

Can BOE's technology catch up with OLED leader Samsung Electronics? A foreign OLED expert employed by a Chinese factory said that BOE B7's technology is comparable to that of Samsung. However, Zhang Baizhe, a professor at Tsinghua University and a liquid crystal display expert, believes that although the Chinese plant has invested heavily, OLED technology is more difficult. Samsung insisted on developing for more than 10 years, and spent at least four or five years on improving the yield. Chinese manufacturers must be fully prepared.
