According to news from the American Automobile Magazine, following the launch of the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell car, Toyota tried to promote fuel cell technology to heavy trucks. To test the technology's use in trucks, Toyota put ProjectPortal fuel cell trucks into the Los Angeles and Long Beach port warehouses to transport cargo.
At present, the Toyota Class8 concept truck has completed more than 4,000 miles of cargo. From October 23 onwards, the truck will perform a new cargo mission, driving nearly 200 miles per day. Toyota will increase the mileage of fuel cell trucks as feasibility studies continue.
The ProjectPortal truck is equipped with a small 12-kilowatt battery and a fuel cell battery in Mirai. It has a power of 670 horsepower, a peak torque of 1,325 pound-feet, and a cruising range of more than 200 miles. Toyota expects its load capacity to be 80,000 pounds. What's more important is that its emissions are only water.
At present, heavy trucks have caused a lot of pollution in the areas near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, so Toyota wants to build a zero-emission truck. In addition, other companies are also working hard to apply electric vehicle technology to trucks. Cummins has launched semi-automatic electric trucks, and Tesla will also launch similar trucks next month.
