The BBC has been making virtual reality and 360-degree video for some time. Now, the BBC officially established the BBC Reality Labs to be responsible for the creation of VR and AR content.
BBC Reality Labs will be responsible for expanding the BBC's already-developed projects in the VR field, and will explore how VR and AR technologies will enhance the BBC as a whole. The BBC Reality Labs team plans to work with the World Wide Web Consortium and will continue to use the open source WebVR standard to create VR content for web browsers.
Some of BBC Reality Labs' plans include further development of WebVR content, as well as exploring web browsers, how to bring VR content to viewers.
The BBC Reality Labs team wrote on the blog post that they will work with a range of existing BBC creative teams to explore how VR and AR content will be integrated into the BBC's current workflow and framework, as well as ensure that content creation can be made easier.
The recently launched BBC Taster VR application will be a key component of this strategy.
