Application of RFID in Chocolate Production Line

All molds at a glance
Chocolate production is a multi-stage complex process. Winkler und Dünnebier Sü●warenmaschinen GmbH (WDS) therefore decided to introduce RFID as an innovative NFC technology for its confectionery production.
For this reason, all plastic moulds (which may amount to several thousand depending on the factory) are equipped with RFID data carriers. The read/write heads are permanently installed in production lines and mobile acquisition systems in warehouses and production areas and can track the progress of each mold through the central control station. Within the production line, a database-oriented RFID system helps ensure optimal mold and product tracking, as well as process optimization and production statistics improvements.
All the information collected by the control system is transmitted to the factory operations server's local database, which stores data for all molds in the current production cycle of the production line. The generated information is synchronized with the server for comprehensive mold management and tracking. The complete RFID system not only includes the read head on the production machine, but also includes the die cleaning station and the read head on the storage system. If customer needs, WDS can even use Turck RFID read heads to transform third-party equipment.

Data with added value
Today, Turck's RFID system ensures that the central server database of all WDS machines contains valuable information that can be used to optimize plant productivity and production quality. The data pool has a wide range of applications, including optimizing logistics. With a click of the mouse, the system displays the position of each mold, or tracks the path that the mold passes through in the production plant. This allows easy positioning of potential sources of failure.
Production-specific data can also be determined using Turck's RFID system: For example, molds with an above-average scrap rate can be easily identified and even complete mold sets can be automatically picked up. Another application is to compare the production characteristics of the die set with a specific batch. In addition to quality management, the data pool also provides a wide range of applications for quality monitoring and hygiene guidance within the factory.
The RFID system can easily identify whether the cleaning cycle was performed correctly. Now, RFID can closely track production sequences, such as placing molds in a cooling cabinet, or changing molds for special test samples during production. If the inserted mold is not suitable for the current production process, the technology can also immediately issue an alarm. It is even possible to change the mold during the production process: when the new mold is inserted into the system, the old mold is ejected. The user can also use the freely combined tool set production scheme to increase production flexibility.
