International Rectifier ( IR ), a global leader in power semiconductors and management solutions, announced the expansion of its Sup IR Buck integrated point-of-load (POL) regulator family. The new device is ideal for energy-efficient servers, storage systems, telecommunications systems and network communications applications, with higher efficiency and more features than previous generations, resulting in energy savings and ease of implementation on the board.
The IR 3837M, IR3838M, and IR3839M SupIRBuck regulators and trackers integrate high-performance controllers and IR's latest MOSFETs in a 5 × 6mm ultra-thin PQFN package to deliver 14 A, 10 A, and 6 A output currents, respectively. To achieve peak efficiency of over 96%. New products offer more features than previous generation devices, including 4.5 V to 16 V monorail input voltage, external reference for margin, internal digital soft-start and external synchronization to reduce noise and EMI in multi-rail systems . In addition, the new device can be configured for DDR memory tracking or sequencing and utilizes trace capability to provide power good output for undervoltage and overvoltage detection to reduce the number of external components required by other similar solutions to implement these functions. With a temperature range of 0-125°C and a reference voltage accuracy of 0.6 V ±1%, the new device provides very accurate regulation and a 5 V external bias option to help improve light load efficiency.
The new device eliminates the need for traditional two-stage POL conversion and saves energy, size and cost with direct 12 Vin operation. While optimizing for a 12 V input voltage, these devices also deliver excellent efficiency in 9.6 V, 5 V, or 3.3 V input voltage applications. With programmable switching frequencies up to 1.5 MHz and a small footprint, the new regulators not only achieve higher power densities, but also reduce size and cost. In addition, the versatile footprint of these devices provides design flexibility and allows for clip layouts to speed time to market.
Pan Dawei, vice president of sales for IR Asia Pacific, said: "The new SupIRBuck device family offers enhanced functionality while reducing board space and significantly increasing power and space-constrained server, storage and network communications applications. The overall system efficiency allows IR to continue to meet customer needs and help them overcome POL's erratic design challenges."
Other SupIRBuck features include programmable interrupt current limit, enhanced pre-bias enable, temperature protection, voltage sense enable pin, and operating junction temperature (Tj) from -40°C to 125°C.
Design Tools
The new SupIRBuck point-of-load regulator is now available in volume orders. Relevant data and application notes are available on the IR website at At the same time, IR also prepared reference designs for IRDC3837, IRDC3838 and IRCD3839 SupIRBuck for request.
An easy-to-use interactive online tool can be registered at http://mypower.irf.com/SupIRBuck to quickly select and simulate selected SupIRBuck products. The SupIRBuck online tool selects the right device for a specific application based on the input and output parameters given by the designer. By entering basic requirements, the tool captures schematics, creates a reference design and associated bill of materials (BOM) and views waveforms, and performs complex thermal performance and application analysis quickly and easily, greatly accelerating development time.
